Dr Awal Fuseini is a senior Halal manager at the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). Awal looks after the domestic and some export markets, including the Middle East and Africa.
He holds a BSc Agriculture degree from Cape Coast University, an MSc Meat Science and Technology from Bristol University and a PhD in veterinary sciences, also from Bristol University. His PhD was funded by the Humane Slaughter Association (HSA) to investigate the welfare aspect of beef slaughter.
Awal has published several books, book chapters, and peer reviewed scientific articles in some high impact journals. He co-chairs a meat industry working group on the direct supply of meat during the Qurbani festival in the UK, under the auspices of the Food Standards Agency (FSA). Awal speaks regularly at meat industry and Halal conferences across the globe, he is recognised as an expert in Halal slaughter.
Awal is a 2025 Nuffield Farming Scholar, his scholarship focuses on Halal slaughter regulations around the globe. He hopes his Nuffield findings will improve animal welfare and export opportunities for halal meat produced in the UK.
